The 80s and 90s are the hey-days of Hong Kong’s TVB series, with many beloved series produced. One particular song that had a deep nostalgia for me is theme song from The Saga of the Lost Kingdom, which was sung by Anita Mui – loosely translated as “Ignorance is Bliss”.

The series revolves around Ying Dan, a slow-witted but pure-hearted guy who is also the descendant of a lost kingdom. The series follows his adventures from days of being bullied in the forgotten valley, to being enlightened and becoming highly intelligent when he chances upon a creature that helped him to transform. His subsequent journey outside the valley exposes him to the many wickedness of human kind & their manipulations of situations.
The title of the song is 难得糊涂 (nan de hu tu), loosely translated as ignorance is bliss aptly describes Ying Dan’s journey. Sometimes it may be better to be ignorant of the ill-intentions of people.
Frankly, I could not remember the details but only remembered Ying Dan having a happy ending with his beloved & retreating back to the secret valley. I guess his method to maintain ignorance while protecting himself is to renounce the big bad world & seek isolation. Ying Dan is portrayed by Roger Kwok, who was so young back then!

The original. Who can forget Anita Mui’s very special deep voice, which enhanced the song even more.
Sharing the theme song in string ensemble, which sounded quite fun vs the majestic original as sung by Anita Mui.
